Richard Thomas Parker was the last man to be publicly hanged in Nottingham, on 10 August 1864, outside what is now the National Justice Museum. His crime? He had shot and killed his mother in the village of Fiskerton. Parker was tried and found guilty of wilful murder—but would today’s jury reach the same verdict?
